Collection of 113 loose prints tipped onto modern mounts and enclosed in melinex sleeves. The original form of the collection before conservation is unknown, but presumably comprised prints mounted on card now discarded. A few original captions on original card have been preserved and are mounted below the prints. The majority of captions, however, are in the form of modern typescript labels laid down on the mounts: the information for these captions is generally taken from pencilled notes on the reverse of the prints, although these are not reproduced verbatim.

The collection can be broken down into the following groups:

Prints 1–22. Views at Lucknow, Kanpur and Delhi of scenes connected with the Uprising of 1857–58, photographed by Felice Beato in 1858.

Prints 23–24. Portrait groups of Amir Sher Ali by Baker and Burke, taken after the durbar at Umballa in March 1869.

Prints 25–26. Two prints by Captain Edward Francis Chapman, photographed in the course of Sir Thomas Forsyth's mission to Yarkand in 1873–74.

Prints 27–30. Two views of cantonments in the North-West Frontier Province and two portraits of Indian rulers, 1870s.

Prints 31–67. Architectural and archaeological photographs of sites in South India, 1860s–70s, the majority anonymous but a few credited to Alexander Rea. Locations include Palmaner (North Arcot), Tanjavur, Srirangam, Madurai, Kalugumalai, Mamallapuram.

Prints 68–79. Architectural views by Lala Deen Dayal, c.1882, mainly at Gwalior.

Prints 80–90. Miscellaneous topographical views, mainly of Calcutta, by Samuel Bourne and others, 1860s–70s.

Prints 91–95. Views and ethnographical studies taken at Darjiling by John H. Doyle, c.1875.

Prints 96–108. Miscellaneous views of Bengal, Delhi, Allahabad, Varanasi, Sarnath, some by Thomas Rust, 1870s.

Prints 109–113. Views in Egypt by F. Meissner and others, 1870s.
