Scope & Content:

Collection of 170 prints, originally housed loose between the pages of a half morocco bound album measuring 365 x 280 mm. Only a few of the prints, those on the early pages, have been lightly pasted down onto the page. Inside front cover contains a brief letterpress label from a dealer's catalogue describing the collection, with a pencilled note of the price (£2/2/-d). The binding is now stored separately.

Almost all the photographs show views and details of the Ellora Caves, with two additional prints of Kondane and five of Ahmadabad. The majority of the prints also appear in the India Office Series of albums (Photo 1000), where most are credited to Henry Cousens. Many of the views in this collection are in better condition than the prints in Photo 1000. A number of the views (also duplicated in Photo 1000) are signed 'J. J.' in the negative: this has been taken to signify J. Johnston, who is credited with a few views at Ellora in T. Bloch, 'A list of the photographic negatives...in...the Indian Museum...[and] the India Office' (Calcutta, 1900). There are also a number of small stereoscopic size prints in this collection which, on grounds of style and dating have also here been attributed to Johnston, although this remains a very tentative identification. All prints credited to Johnston have been assigned an approximate date of 1874, since his view of the Indra Sabha Cave with the column still standing is specifically dated (see print 146) and it is likely that the others would have been taken on the same expedition.

There are some grounds for thinking that this album may have been the property of the archaeologist James Burgess. It was acquired in 1918, two years after Burgess' death, and many of the prints are captioned in his hand. A number of these photographs were used as illustrations in Burgess' 'Report on the Elura Cave Temples and the Brahmanical and Jaina Caves in Western India completing the results of the fifth, sixth, and seventh seasons' operations of the Archaeological Survey 1877–78, 1878–79, 1879–80' (Archaeological Survey of Western India, vol. V, London, 1883), and several of the prints have pencilled instructions on the reverse for making the collotype plates (although in some instances the page references are at variance with the final reproduced version).
