Scope & Content:

Red buckram folder measuring 430x370mm, incorrectly titled 'Government House, Calcutta. Photographs.' on front cover, containing prints mounted on loose sheets of card, with captions written in ink beneath each print (with the exception of prints 1 and 2, which are uncaptioned).

The collection comprises a photographic survey of interior and exterior views of the Viceregal Lodge soon after its completion in 1888. Between 1862 and 1868 the Viceroy was accommodated at Peterhof during the annual migration of government to the hills. The unsuitability of the house and grounds led Lord Dufferin to press for a more appropriate residence. The building was designed by Henry Irwin in 'English Renaissance' style, with a good deal of input from Dufferin himself, and photographs of the interior show the extensive use of teak panelling throughout the building. For a later series of views, several taken from the same viewpoint some three decades later, see Photo 10/22 (1-17). Assuming that all the photographs were taken at about the same time, a date of September 1888 is supplied by the calendar on the table of the study in print 11, which reads 'Wednesday 26th September': this day and date combination occured in 1888.
