Murray Collection: Views in Delhi, Cawnpore, Allahabad and Benares. Photographer(s): Murray, John
- Scope & Content:
-
Collection of 44 loose prints, mounted on card with letterpress captions pasted below the image. Beneath each caption is the legend: 'Printed at the School of Industrial Art, Calcutta, from a negative by Dr Murray, Civil Surgeon, Agra'. The photographs mainly depict locations connected with the Indian Uprising of 1857–58 and were taken in early 1858 on Murray's return from furlough in England at the request of the Governor General. The photographs show views in Delhi, Cawnpore, Allahabad and Varanasi.
A letter from Murray to the Secretary, Government of India, dated 4 January 1858, notes the request from the Governor General 'to take some photographic views, at Benares, Allahabad, Cawnpore, Agra, and Delhi' and enquires about precise instructions and allowances for this work. In a reply to this, dated 22 January 1858, Beadon writes that 'His Lordship in Council requests that on your way to Cawnpore you will halt at Benares, and apply yourself to taking a set of views of the Raj Ghat entrenchment, conveying as clear and complete an impression of the works as possible ... You are also requested to halt at Allahabad, to take a set of views of the principal buildings of the Fort, and the buildings in course of adaptation or construction as Barracks and Hospitals, and, if possible, to take a general view exhibiting the included sites of any such buildings ... After your arrival at Agra, you will ... proceed to Delhi, and take views of the Palace Buildings and Palace Walls, of the City Walls and principal gates, and of the Jumma Musjid and other Public Buildings of note. The Governor General in Council particularly desires that all the chief features within the enceinte of the Palace Walls, should be represented.' Four sets of prints from the resulting negatives are recorded as being forwarded to the Under Secretary of State for India in London on 8 October 1859.
