Sir George Campbell (1824-1892), Indian Civil Service, arrived in India in 1842 and served in the North-West Provinces and the Punjab before being called to the Bar in 1854. He was appointed a Judge of the High Court, Calcutta in 1862 and was head of the Commission on the Orissa Famine of 1866-67, in which latter year he was appointed Chief Commissioner of the Central Provinces. He served as Lieutenant-Governor of Bengal from 1871 until his retirement on account of ill-health in 1874.
