Panoramic Views of Kanpur. Photographer(s): Beato, Felice
- Scope & Content:
-
Four loose panoramas of scenes associated with the Indian Uprising of 1857–58 at Kanpur, composed of either two or three joined prints. The prints appear to have been removed from mounts or album pages and are accompanied by brief contemporary handwritten captions cut from the original support. It has been suggested that these prints might be the work of the Tytlers: Robert and Harriet Tytler certainly visited Kanpur in their photographic documentation of scenes associated with the Mutiny, but all other identified work by them is in a larger format than these prints, which are therefore more likely to be the work of another photographer. A more likely candidate is Felice Beato, although this is no more than a tentative attribution.
