Scope & Content:: Black full-leather album, measuring 313 x 400 mm, containing mounted prints with typed captions. The title is stamped in gold on the front cover within a decorative border. The coat of arms of Hyderabad State is in the centre of the cover. A small blue label on the inside front cover reads: 'Bound at the Caxton Works, Bombay'. The album records views at the cave temples of Ellora and Ajanta and also at Daulatabad and Khuldabad (Rauza). The last print is a portrait (either a painting or a heavily overpainted photograph) of Sir Salar Jang, Prime Minister of Hyderabad. There is some confusion over the identity of the photographer whose prints are signed 'J. J '. In the Archaeological Survey collection there are some views of Ellora attributed to Johnston although the 'J. J.' is in a different style. These views are adjacent to a series which have the same 'J. J ' signature as in Photo 97 and 2/3, but the ASIO list attributes them to Sykes. The prints in Photo 97 were made 20–30 years after the originals suggesting that Deen Dayal acquired the negatives at some stage.
