Scope & Content:: Carte de visite album in red leather blocked with gold decoration, measuring 168x235mm and containing carte de visite portraits inserted in window mounts (Oval and rectangular on alternate openings). A pencilled inscription on the front free endpaper reads: 'E. D. Burton of Bombay 31 Belsize Avenue Hampstead London 1870–1874'.The binding is weak and some pages have become detached. The photographs are captioned in ink in a contemporary hand beneath each print. The majority of the cartes are studio portraits of Indian rulers, with a selection of portrait studies of ethnic types and occupations in the last half of the album. The photographs are by Bourne and Shepherd, with the exception of print 48 (Schwarzschild and Co) and prints 96 and 99 (unknown photographer).
