- Alfred R. Gaul: 'The Erl King', part-song for SATB chorus with piano accompaniment ad lib.
- Scope & Content:
- Autograph score in ink of Gaul's descriptive choral song, the poetry by Sir Walter Scott from the German of Goethe, signed and dated 'Jan 19 1880' (f. 29) and marked up for publication. The composer presented the manuscript to his friend Edward Morton, illuminating artist, who furnished an illuminated title page and copy of the poem, after which it was bound. Gaul later provided an account of the origin of the composition (f. ii v). Names, presumably of singers, have been added at various points. With sketches of another piece on f. 22v, part of another piece on an additional leaf (f. 31) and an account of Alfred Gaul reprinted from The Musical Herald, November 1889 (ff. 32-33).
