Title:: Portfolio of Calcutta Views. Photographer(s): Unknown
Scope & Content:: Contemporary blue cloth portfolio, titled as above in gilt and blind-stamped with decorative designs, measuring 165 x 215 mm and containing 20 albumen prints individually mounted on card measuring 150 x 203 mm. A sheet with letterpress caption and descriptive text is pasted to the reverse of each mount. The collection comprises architectural views of the principal European (with the exception of print 10) buildings of the city, with a few general topographical studies. An approximate date for the series is supplied by print 2, which shows the High Court, completed in 1873 and here seen nearly completed but without the clock in the central tower, which is still encased in scaffolding.
