Brown and black half-leather album, measuring 342 x 640 mm, containing mounted prints with handwritten captions. The prints in this double album have been arranged in two sequences. The first sequence, prints 1-45, relates to the title 'Photographs of Kabul and its environs,' stamped in gilt on the front board. The second sequence, prints 46-66, relates to the title 'Photographs of Kabul Workshops, etc.,' stamped on the rear board, with prints mounted on the verso of the preceding, starting at the end of the album. These appear to date from around 1893 (see note on dating at print 57). Prints 1-45 have a captions list under the heading, 'List of confidential Photographs of the Defences etc at Kabul, 1879'.

The views taken by the Bengal Sappers and Miners (prints 1-45) are duplicated in other parts of the collection, and the location of these is noted in the individual print entries. Another complete set of these prints (general in brighter condition) can also be found in the Map Library collection at Maps 51850(10). This collection also contains a series of plans of the major forts and other military constructions built during the campaign, as well as useful large-scale plans of Kabul, the Sherpur Cantonment and the Bala Hissar.
