Photographs of views of temples etc in the South Mahratta country. Presented by H. Newton Esq. 23/4/72. Photographer(s): Thomas Biggs; William Henry Pigou.
- Scope & Content:
-
Maroon half-leather album, measuring 564 x 390 mm, with paper label with handwritten title as above and India Museum stamp pasted to front cover. A further label, laid down onto the front fixed endpaper, reads: Photographs of views of Temples, &c. in the Southern Mahratta Country. (Extra Series) Presented by H. Newton, Esq. late of Bombay. 23/4/72. The album contains albumen prints laid down on pages with cream borders round the photographs and brief pencilled captions. The photographs are part of the series of views taken by Biggs and Pigou for the Bombay Government in the mid-1850s, and are duplicated by prints (generally in poorer condition) in the main India Office series (Photo 1000). Original paper negatives for most of these prints are also held in the collection. The page size and cream borders of the album are the same as those in Philip Meadows Taylor and James Fergusson's photographically illustrated work, Architecture in Dharwar and Mysore (John Murray: London, 1866), and the use of the term 'Extra Series' above presumably indicates that these prints were part of the initial selection for inclusion in that work. None of the views in this album, however was finally included in Architecture in Dharwar and Mysore (copies of which can be found at Photo 965/1 and 965/2) although several are similar photographs of the same buildings.
The donor of the album, Henry Newton (1822-1900), Bombay Civil Service 1844-71, was also an amateur photographer and some examples of his work can also be found in Photo 1000.
