Collection of loose, uncaptioned prints recording the opening of the Lloyd Barrage and Canals. The prints show the arrival of the Viceroy, tour of the works, opening addresses, etc. Now known as the Sukkur Barrage, these dams on the Indus just below Sukkur control one of the largest irrigation systems in the world. The inscription on the side of the barrage gives the following account of the project: 'The Lloyd Barrage and Canals. This stone was unveiled on 13th January 1932...by His Excellency The Earl of Willingdon, GMSI, GCMG, GMIE, GBE, Viceroy and Governor General of India, to commemorate the completion and the opening of the seven canal systems designed to irrigate five and a half million acres of land annually in Sind, Baluchistan and Khairpur State. The project, which was prepared by Mr A.A. Musto, CIE, Indian Service of Engineers, was sanctioned by the Secretary of State for India in April 1923. The execution of the work was approved and funds were voted by the Bombay Legislative Council in June 1923. The staff for construction was organised from 1st July 1923, with Mr C.S.C. Harrison, CIE, Indian Service of Engineers, as Chief Engineer. Construction of the Canals was started in January 1925, and of the head works in October 1926. Estimated cost Rs. [blank].
