Miscellaneous archaeological views of southern India
- Scope & Content:
-
Loose prints with pencilled captions on the reverse. Some of the captions appear to be inaccurate. The collection consists mainly of archaeological views at Gingee, Mercara, Gooty, Tanjore (Thanjavur), Kondapalli, Vellore, Tranquebar (Tarangambadi), Coconada (Kakinada).
A note with the collection states that the photographs were taken by the Government Archaeologist A.H. Longhurst, probably in the 1930s. However, all the photographs (apart from print 38) are a good deal earlier than this, most dating from the early years of the century. A number also appear in various of the Archaeological Survey volumes and were probably the work of several different photographers. Duplicates of several of the prints can also be found in Photo 3/1.
Note: Albert Henry Longhurst (b.1876) was Superintendent of the Southern Circle of the Archaeological Survey, Southern Circle, 1910-31 and it is possible that these photographs were taken either by him (although some were certainly taken nearer 1900) or on his instructions.
Photographers = A H Longhurst, Govt Archaeologist 1930's.;
