Thornton Collection: Views in China, Suakin and India. Photographer(s): Beato, Felice
- Scope & Content:
-
Loose prints mounted on modern archival card and inserted in Secol sleeves. The collection appears to have originally been in album form and many of the original captions are retained. The collection was presented by J.P. Thornton, grandson of the compiler Surgeon-General Sir James Howard Thornton (1834-1919), Indian Medical Service 1856-91. Many of the photographs relate to campaigns in which Thornton served and which are described in his Memories of Seven Campaigns (London, 1895). Many of the illustrations in this work are clearly copied from photographs in this collection.
The collection can be broken down into the following subjects:
Prints 1-30 Views in China taken by Felice Beato during the Second China War. Prints 28-30 are probably from this period and location, but do not appear in the catalogue of Beato views published by Hering. This section of the collection also includes a manuscript map of the Taku Forts and surrounding area.
Print 31 Indian Mutiny scene: photographic copy of a painting.
Prints 32-42 Views of the Suakin Campaign, 1885, by Zangaki and Royal Engineers photographer.
Prints 43-50 Miscellaneous views in India and Bhutan, c.1862-c.86.
Prints 51-52 English views.
