'The Tale of Karaito'. A version of 'Karaito zōshi 唐糸草子', an illustrated otogizōshi story of unknown authorship composed during the Muromachi Period (1333-1573). Karaito 唐糸 is the daughter of Tezuka Tarō Mitsumori 手塚太郎光盛 , a retainer of the feudal lord Kiso (Minamoto) Yoshinaka 木曽(源)義仲. Karaito attempts to assassinate Minamoto no Yoritomo, Yoshinaka's cousin and rival but is captured by Yoritomo's forces and imprisoned in Kamakura. Her daughter Manju 万寿 eventually finds and rescues her.
The manuscript is undated but is probably from the early Edo Period (c.1640-1680)
