Genji monogatari kotoba 源氏物語詞
- Scope & Content:
-
An album containing an extract from each of the 54 chapters of the 'Tale of Genji' on the righthand side of the opening and a corresponding painting by Sumiyoshi Jokei 住吉如慶 (1599-1670) on the opposite page. The extracts are written by imperial princes and high-ranking members of the Court of Emperor Go-Mizunoo. All but one of the contributors are indicated by small paper slips bearing their names and titles attached to the top righthand corner of the righthand page of each opening. The presence on the paintings of the seals '住吉' [Sumiyoshi] and '法橋 '[(Hōkyō], suggest that the album was compiled between 1663 when Jokei was given the name Sumoyoshi and the religious title Hōkyō and 1666 when the first of the calligraphers, Nijō Yasumichi, died.
