'The Tale of Benkei' . An illustrated otogizōshi story of unknown authorship, composed during the Muromachi Period (1333-1573), recounting the early life of the 12th century warrior monk Musashibō Benkei 武蔵坊弁慶 , his meeting with Minamoto no Yoshitsune 源義経, younger brother of Shōgun Minamoto no Yoritomo 源頼朝, and their early adventures together.
The manuscript is undated but is probably from the early Edo Period (1640-1680)
