Iwaya いわや
- Scope & Content:
-
A version of 'Iwaya no sōshi 岩屋草子', an illustrated otogizōshi story of the 'mamakomono 継子物' (stepchild/wicked stepmother) category. Of unknown authorship but probably composed during the Muromachi Period (1333-1573). It concerns the daughter of Middle Counsellor Horikawa Koretaka 堀川中納言惟仲 whose stepmother tries to have her killed but who is saved and takes refuge in a fisherman's cave (the 'iwaya' of the title). There she is discovered by the Captain of the Second Rank and becomes his wife before finally being reunited with her father.
The manuscript is undated but probably is from the mid Edo Period (c.1680-1780)
