- Scope & Content:

'The Girl with the Bowl on her Head', an illustrated otogizōshi story of the 'mamakomono 継子物' ('stepchild stories' or 'wicked stepmother stories') category. Of unknown authorship the tale was composed during the Muromachi Period (1333-1573). It tells of a girl whose dying mother places a bowl on her head in accordance with a divine command. When her father remarries, the girl suffers at the hands of her stepmother and is expelled from her home. She tries to drown herself but the bowl on her head makes her float to the surface. She is rescued by Captain Yamakage and becomes an attendant in his bath house. The captain's youngest son falls in love with her and wishes to marry her but his parents disapprove. Through a series of tests Hachikazuki proves her worth and the bowl falls from her head revealing her beauty. She marries the Captain's son who becomes heir to his family's fortune and together they live happily ever after.
The manuscript is undated but is probably from the early Edo Period (c.1640-1680)
