Kachō Fūgetsu 花鳥風月
- Scope & Content:
-
‘Flower and Birds and Wind and Moon’. An illustrated otogizōshi tale of unknown authorship composed during the Muromachi Period (1333-1573). Title on title slip: Kachō Fūgetsu 花鳥風月. Also known as Ōgiawase monogatari 扇合物語 (The Competition of Illustrated Fans).
Summary: in the time of Retired Emperor Hagiwara (Emperor Hanazono) a competiton of illustrated fans was held at the residence of Middle Counsellor Hamuro 葉室中納言. An argument developed among those present over whether the figure depicted on one of the fans was the courtier and poet Ariwara no Narihira or the fictional prince Hikaru Genji ( hero of ‘The Tale of Genji’). To settle the matter, two shrine maidens, sisters called Kachō (Flowers and Birds) and Fūgetsu (Wind and Moon) were ordered to communicate with the spirits to find out the truth. The spirits of both Narihira and Hikaru Genji spoke through the maidens and revealed that the figure painted on the fan was Hikaru Genji. Kachō and Fūgetsu were rewarded for their services.
The manuscript is undated but is probably from the early Edo Period (c. 1640-1680)
