- Scope & Content:
- The collection includes a heterogeneous corpus of administrative records produced during the French colonial rule in Mali. This "closed fonds" (from 1897 up to 1960) is preserved along with the documents produced by the Cercle in Mali's independence period (“open fonds”, from 1960 to present day). It includes manuscript volumes dedicated to court proceedings and judgments; political reports; dossiers relating to chieftainship, “Land Affairs” or “Muslim Affairs”; reports on the inspections of the different cantons; circular letters; correspondence (in-letters, out-letters, minutes, telegrams), confidential letters and files, Records of births, deaths and marriages, etc. The collection refers to a wide area of Cercle of Bandiagara, an administrative unit introduced in 1903 by the French, that came to encompass a territory reaching up to Burkina Faso.

- All archival material in the collection originates from a common source and were produced or received in the course of the French colonial administration of the Cercle of Bandiagara (Mali). With the end of French colonial rule in Mali, the collection has been preserved by the Prefecture of Bandiagara as “closed fonds”, until the present day. In 1997, with the collapse of the ancient colonial building, the surviving part of it has been located within several rooms of a new building of the Prefecture of Bandiagara, often mixed with the archival material of the period after the independence (open fonds).

- Arrangement:
- The original principles of archival arrangement, imposed by french colonial administration, were modified by the independent Republic of Mali in a new system of arrangement of "closed" fonds. After the collapse of the ancient seat of the archive of Bandiagara, the records are not easily recoverable in an original order. Today, the arrangement of the “closed fonds” only affects a small part of archival materials. Most of it was partially and temporarily reorganized by an emergency rescue undertaken by Sapienza - University of Rome (2005-2011). Being not always possible to trace any clear preexisting arrangement for some series or files, the project has provided a new system of arrangement to the archival materials surveyed, gathered in two series in date order: 1. Judicial Records; 2. Muslim Affairs. Over the years, some employees of the Prefecture of Bandiagara have been in charge for the management of the archive.
