Aoba no fue no monogatari 青葉の笛の物語
- Scope & Content:
-
'The Tale of the Flute with Green Leaves'.
Title on title slip: Aoba あお葉.
Artist: Isome Tsuna 居初津奈, active 1680s-1690s.
An illustrated otogizōshi story. The manuscript is believed to be the work of the female artist Isome Tsuna and therefore dates from the mid Edo Period (c.1680-1700).
Summary: Night after night Emperor Ninmyō hears the beautiful sound of a flute and sends Ariwara no Narihira to find out who is playing. At the Rashōmon Gate Narihira meets a young temple acolyte and follows him to an old temple in Minasegahara where the boy expounds to him the merits of the Lotus Sutra. The next day he accompanies Narihira to Minoo in the Province of Settsu where he tells him his life story and gives him the flute. Narihira returns to the capital, presents the flute to the emperor and achieves fame and fortune.
