Miscellaneous portraits of the royal family of Oudh and other sitters. Photographer(s): Ahmad Ali Khan
- Scope & Content:
-
Collection of loose portrait photographs mounted on card. The prints can be broken down into two broad categories as follows:
Prints 1-4 Portraits of members of the royal family of Oudh, c.1855. These four salt prints, now much faded, are laid down onto contemporary card mounts within extravagant illuminated decorative borders. Below each portrait is a paragraph of (?)Urdu text, so far untranslated. These prints are almost certainly the work of Ahmed Ali Khan of Lucknow (compare print type, poses, use of gold leaf, with portraits in Photo 296. The chair in which many of the sitters are placed in those albums is also identical to the one seen in these prints).
Prints 5-9 Miscellaneous European portraits, 1860s-70s. Prints 5-7 are photographic copies of paintings, prints 8-9 are original photographs.
