'The Tale of the Pine and Bamboo'. Title on title slip: 'Matsutake monogatari emaki 松竹物語絵巻. An illustrated otogizōshi story of unknown authorship composed during the Muromachi Period (1333-1573). It tells of a married couple who lived for a thousand years in the days of Emperor Itoku 懿徳天皇, traditionally the fourth emperor of Japan. Keen to learn the secret of their long lives, the emperor summons them to appear before him and is told they drink water from a spring near Mt Iwane. The emperor travels to the mountain, drinks from the spring and also attains longevity . Eventually the couple become gods and are worshipped in the form of a pine tree and a bamboo, symbols of longevity and constancy respectively.
The manuscript is undated but probably from early Edo Period (c.16401680)
