Yuriwaka Daijin ゆりわか大臣 [由利若大臣]
- Scope & Content:
-
'The story of Minister Yuriwaka'. A lavishly illustrated manuscript of the Kōwakamai (recitative dance) also known as 'Yuriwaka Daijin monogatari 百合若大臣物語'. Of unknown authorship but composed during the late Muromachi Period (c.1500-1573).
Title on title slips: scroll 1: ゆりわか大臣 上, scroll 2: 由利若大臣 中, scroll 3: ゆりわか大臣 下.
Summary: the eponymous Minister of the Right Yuriwaka was a successful leader of the forces sent to repel the Mongol invasions of Japan in the late 13th century. On his way home in triumph, however, he fell victim to a plot by two members of his retinue and was abandoned on the island of Genkaijima 玄海島 . Yuriwaka was given up for dead but his wife subsequently learned the truth and sent her husband’s favourite hawk to take food to him. Yuriwaka was eventually rescued and exacted revenge on his enemies. Similarities with Homer’s Odyssey have led some scholars to see a western influence in the tale but it is unclear whether the Homeric tale would have been known in Japan at the time of its composition.
This manuscript is undated but was probably written in the early Edo Period (c.1640-1680).
