Title:

Photograph album of Lieutenant Charles Barry Close, Norfolk Regiment: Views in Norway, India and Burma.

Scope & Content:

Blue half-leather bound album measuring 430x320mm, with spine missing, back board loose and front board detached from album block. The volume is stamped 'C.B.C. 1887.-89.' in gold on the front cover and from internal evidence the owner can be identified as Lieutenant Charles Barry Chase (b.1862), who served in the Norfolk Regiment from 1882 until his retirement with the rank of Major in 1907. He served in Burma from 1887-89, the period to which most of the photographs in the album relate. The contents of the album can be broken down as follows:

Print 21 Portrait group at Sitapur, 1888, followed by several missing pages.

Print 22-61 Views in Burma, mainly Mandalay, by Felice Beato, c.1889.
