Title:

Collection of duplicate negatives of Indian tours. Photographer(s): Unknown

Scope & Content:

Collection of modern safety film duplicate negatives made from original nitrate negatives, now destroyed. Captioning is minimal, and the collection retains the original ordering whereby each film or collection of films has been assigned an alphabetical letter (from A-LLL with some gaps), and an overall title, mainly supplying only geographical location. Each negative is now assigned an individual number from 1-625.

There are no details as to acquisition or the identity of the photographer. From the internal evidence of the photographs, however, and choice of subject matter, the photographer appears to have been involved in some sort of geological surveying or civil engineering work, and there are numerous views of quarries and rock strata. The majority of the views, however, are of more general topographical and architectural subjects and were taken during a visit in 1913-14, which appears to have centred on the Central Provinces, Bihar and Bengal, and on a second trip in 1918-18, which contains a certain amount of South Indian material.

The photographic quality of the negatives is generally of a high amateur standard and the collection contains some good documentation of topography, architecture, civil engineering projects and rural scenes.
