Title:

Photographs of Church Missionary Society work at Kerman, Southern Iran. Photographer: H. E. J. Biggs

Scope & Content:

Collection of 59 original ¼-plate glass negatives and five lantern slides, contained in envelopes, some of which have captions and dates written on the outside. The collection shows scenes at the C.M..S. hospital and school at Kerman in southern Iran, as well as social and family scenes. Documentation for some images is lacking or incomplete and it was originally assumed that all the photographs related to Kerman; on closer examination, however, some of the views are of scenes in Esfahan and it is possible that a number of the negatives, here catalogued as being taken at Kerman, in fact show other locations.

The Church Missionary Society Hospital at Kerman, staffed with a male and a female English doctor, was opened in 1901. The Dr Carr seen at 776 (13) is possibly the male doctor at the hospital. A C.M.S. school was opened in about 1904 and in 1905 there were six English missionaries stationed at Kerman (see Historical Gazetteer of Iran, 1988 reprint, vol. 4).
