Major Henry Pelham Close Collection: Album of views and portraits in India and Europe.
- Scope & Content:
-
Green full-leather album, 423x335mm, decorated with gold floral borders on the front and back covers. An inscription on the front free endpaper reads: 'A.C.C. from H.P.C., Abbottabad, 1865'. Prints are mounted with handwritten captions below. Photographs include topographical and architectural views in the Sind Valley, Srinagar, Murree, Kohat, Abbottabad, Peshawar, Kagan Valley, Kanpur, Lucknow, Calcutta, Alexandria, Naini Tal, various English cathedrals, Venice and Gibraltar. Portraits include Lord Lawrence and Council, Kohat Garrison officers, Rawalpindi Police, 1st Punjab Infantry, Murree Club members, 5th Gurkhas, 3rd Sikh Infantry, 2nd Punjab Cavalry and miscellaneous individuals.
Henry Pelham Close, the son of Rev. Francis Close and his wife Anne Diana, was born in Cheltenham on 14 June 1830 and entered the Bombay Infantry as a cadet in 1850. He died in London on 24 December 1891. The dedication of the album indicates that it was given by Close to his wife Annette Charlotte, who was born 27 July 1837, married H.P. Close in Europe or the United Kingdom on 7 July 1857, and died 14 December 1910 (see Bombay Military Fund Registers, L/AG/23/12/4 no. 269 and L/AG/23/12/12 no. 1221).
