James Collection: Album of views in Darjeeling.

Full-leather album, 240x307mm, containing mounted prints with detailed handwritten captions (three loose prints are inserted at the back of the album). The front free endpaper is signed: 'by Col H.C. James. R.J.J. from Henry, August 1858'. Photographs include social life scenes of European families at their bungalows in Darjeeling, village scenes, river scenes, the church, Sikkim officials, Kuar Singh the rebel leader at Arrah and the Lieutenant-Governor's camp.
Colonel Henry Curry James (1817-1866) entered the Bengal Infantry in 1835; in 1849 he entered the Surveyor-General's Departmentand was ADC to the Lieutenant-Governor of Bengal in c.1856. He served as Officiating Superintendent at Darjeeling in 1857 and 1864, and was private Secretary to the Lieutenant-Governor fo Bengal from 1862-66.
