Views of Darjeeling and Railway

Scope & Content:

Half-leather bound album (spine piece detached and boards loose), measuring 270x395mm, with loose dust jacket made from brown paper on which the title as above is handwritten. The prints, which are captioned in the negative, are mounted singly on the recto of each leaf. The photographs show views of tea plantations, scenes (including construction work) on the Darjeeling Hill Railway and general topographical views in and around Darjeeling. Many of the views were taken by Samuel Bourne in the mid-1860s, but these are later prints, probably dating from the 1880s.

With the album is a xerox copy of an article by P.J. Bawcutt and H.C. Hughes entitled Frontier Railway of the Himalayas (The Railway Magazine, June 1966).
