- Title:
- Lee Harwood: Letters to Victor Bockris, and other material
- Scope & Content:
-
The file comprises: a single letter from Harwood to Tom Clark enclosing Harwood, title illegible (Writers Forum, 1965); 5 letters from Lee Harwood to Victor Bockris, chiefly regarding the (unrealised) project of Bockris to publish a book of Harwood's translations of Tristan Tzara, following his publication of a small selection of them in The Pennsylvania Review, No. 1 (1970); and Harwood's autograph drafts (1970) of his poem '"inside the harm is a clearing"'.
(1). Letter to Tom Clark. London, 14 September 1966. Autograph letter signed (1 sheet), with a copy of Harwood, title illegible (Writers Forum, 1965): 'Herewith my book of juvenilia - be warned!' The book is inscribed: 'To Tom, with love, Lee. 14 sept. '66.'
(2). Five letters to Victor Bockris:
- Better Books, London. Harwood to Victor Bockris, 2 November 1971. Typed letter signed (1 sheet).
- Better Books, London. Harwood to Bockris, 10 November 1971. Typed letter signed (1 sheet).
- Aegean School of Fine Arts, Paros, Greece. Harwood to Bockris. 30 May 1972. Typed letter signed (1 sheet), with envelope (London address): 'About the Tzara mss - many thanks for bringing it over. What would be best would be if you could give the typescript to Asa Benveniste, Trigram Press [...] Also tell Asa its the only carbon!'
- Boston, Massachusetts. Harwood [Lee Walker] to Bockris, 20 November 1972. Typed letter signed (1 sheet), with envelope. Harwood refers to being 'released' from his contract with Fulcrum Press and to his next book (H.M.S. Little Fox) being published by Trigram Press (who published Harwood's translations of Tzara in 1975); however, H.M.S Fox was to be eventually published by Oasis Books (1975).
- Boston, Massachusetts. Harwood [Lee Walker] to Bockris. 3 January 1973. Autograph letter signed (1 sheet), with envelope. Harwood changes his mind about appearing in the magazine Contact: 'I saw issues 1-3 at Lewis's the other night and thinking of my work in the context of the mag it already doesn't seem to fit.'
(3). '"inside the harm is a clearing"':
- A typed note signed (1 sheet, 20 May 1970, addressee not indicated) referring to how the poem should be published ('Ideally the poem's 6 sections would each be printed on a separate loose sheet, so that the reader could decide what order he'd/she'd like to have the work in'); the note also refers to the various drafts of the poem that follow.
- Typed carbon of the poem (text as published), dated: '23.ii-6.iii.70 / Brighton' (2 sheets).
- First and second drafts, typed and autograph (8 sheets).
- Two sheets of notes about the poem (referring to Douglas Oliver, F. T. Prince, John Temple).
