Tengu no dairi 天狗の内裏
- Scope & Content:

‘The Palace of the Tengu’. Title on title slip: 天狗の内裏. 上 (下). An otogizoshi of unknown authorship of the Hōganmono ('Magistrate' i.e. Yoshitsune) genre recounting an episode from the life of the tragic hero Minamoto no Yoshitsune 源義経, younger brother of Shōgun Minamoto no Yoritomo 源頼朝.
Summary: at the age of 7 Yoshitsune enters the Buddhist temple at Kurama and devotes himself to study. At the age of 15 he visits the Palace of the Tengu (long-nosed goblins) hidden in the mountains where he is received by the Tengu King and shown the five arts of the Tengu. Yoshitsune expresses a desire to meet his late father Yoshitomo and so the Tengu King leads him through various hells to the Pure Land. Yoshitomo appears as a Buddha and asks his son to defeat the rival Taira clan and ensure the future of the Minamoto. Yoshitsune vows to do this and his father tells him what the future holds for him.
The manuscript is undated but was probably written at the end of Muromachi Period (c.1560-1600)
