Album of views of India and Egypt relating to the career of R. Hedger Wallace. Photographer(s): Arnoux, Hippolyte
- Scope & Content:
-
Photograph album, measuring 237 x 285 mm, lacking covers and generally in poor condition, with some leaves detached. The album contents illustrate the career of the agriculturalist R. Hedger Wallace at the Rosa sugar estate and rum factory near Shahjahanpur, where he was employed between c. 1881-87 (prints 1-13). The remaining photographs (prints 14-25) are commercially produced views of Egypt and the Suez Canal, presumably acquired on his voyage home from India, although probably photographed c. 1870s. Also loosely inserted in the album is a programme for a 'List of popular lectures' on agricultural subjects, to be given by Hedger Wallace in 1900-1901. A press cutting (c. 1889) from an unidentified newspaper states that Hedger Wallace was born in India in 1859 and spent his boyhood and youth in Fife and Edinburgh, before studying at Edinburgh University. He then worked in the Rosa sugar factory in India, before travelling to the Straits and China to report on sugar production. He later (c. 1889) served as President of the Institute of Scottish Teachers of Agriculture. The album is accompanied by a medal awarded to Hedger Wallace by the Royal Scottish Society of Arts, in recognition of his paper on Agricultural Education read on the 26th of March 1888.
