Scope & Content:

Oblong folio album, quarter leather and maroon pebbled cloth boards with rules in blind, marbled endpapers, titled in gilt on spine, measuring 317 x 450 mm and containing 26 albumen prints, guard-mounted one to a page (recto only), with titles written in a neat cursive hand in French beneath each image. The album includes topographical and architectural views of Batavia (Jakarta) and the Banda Islands, as well as portraits of the Javanese artist Raden Saleh and the Susuhunan of Surakarta, Pakubuwana IX. The majority of the views appear to date from the 1860s, although a few may have been taken in the following decade. Information and dating of these photographs has relied heavily on Scott Merrillees, Batavia in nineteenth century photographs (Archipelago Press, Singapore, 2000) and Steven Wachlin, Woodbury and Page Photographers Java (KITLV Press, Leiden, 1994).
