113 prints originally mounted on album pages with self-adhesive caption labels (now removed and rehoused for conservation reasons); 4 negatives (one original, three copy negatives); one modern copy print. The photographs and sticky captions originally attached to them have been removed from the album pages for conservation reasons. A photocopy of the album in its original form is stored with the collection.
The photographs in the album record military activities in the career of John Harold George Chapman, 6th Gurkha Rifles, between 1929 and 1931. The album is a mixture of Chapman's own snapshots, prints acquired from the studio of Mela Ram and a few RAF aerial views.
The contents has been listed by the donor and include: views of Landi Kotal; the Khyber Pass and Landi Khana camp (with the Afghan border at Torkam marked on the print); Bagh Fort, overlooking the Afghan frontier line; a portraits of Bacha-i-Saqao, who reigned briefly as King of Afghanistan under the name Habibullah Khan from 1928-29; Bacha-i-Saqao and followers hanged in Kabul, 1930, with names in Persian above the gallows; Bacha-i-Saqao and followers cut down (with names written in Gujarati); headstone of the grave of the Pashtun nationalist leader Abdul Gaffur Khan; the 'Red Shirt' Uprising, Peshawar, 1930; Bara Fort, Kajuri Plain; Mitchini Fort; ferry at Mari Indus, where the railway changes from broad to narrow gauge; Razmak military camp, Waziristan; Wachoba camp; aerial photographs of Ajim Khan, Amin Shah, Janai, Rakhim; a Bristol Fighter bi-plane in flight.
