Photographs of the Siege of Peking. Photographer: Charles A. Killie
- Scope & Content:
-
Album measuring 257 x 294 mm, containing 59 prints, 50 of which are by Killie from his series of views taken inside the British Legation at the Peking during its period of besiegement during the Boxer Uprising. Killie's photographs are accompanied by letterpress descriptive labels pasted beneath each image. Of the remaining photographs, print 1 in the album is a portrait group of a Chinese family c. 1900, while prints 52-59 show views on the Yangtze and other uncaptioned scenes which appear to be of an earlier date. For background to the seige, with useful maps of the topography of the legations, see Michael J. Moser and Yeone Wei-Chih Moser, Foreigners within the gates. The legations at Peking (first published 1993, revised edition, Serindia Publications, Chicago, 2006).
