Korean examination paper

Examination paper (sigwŏn 試卷) for the literary examination (mun'gwa 文科) of the traditional Korean state examinations (Kwagŏ 科擧). The righthand section of the paper bearing the identity of the candidate is still folded and sealed. The inscription Hamgyŏng-do 咸鏡道 indicates that the candidate was from that province and the seal ‘ Sin Kŭnbong 臣謹封’ implies that it was to be presented to the King. The text is a Chinese poem of the 'fu 賦' genre extolling the virtues of the king and entitled in Chinese 'Si fang lai guan zhe jie gan hua qi de 四方来觀者皆感化其徳'.
There are several large official seals stamped on the text reading ‘Kwagŏjibo 科擧之寶’ which was first used in 1624. - Collection Area:
