- Title:
- Kyŏmjae hwach‛ op 謙齋畫帖
- Scope & Content:
- 'Picture album by Kyŏmjae '. According to the title slip on the front cover this is supposedly a collection of pictures by the Korean artist Chŏng Sŏn (1676-1769) (studio name Kyŏmjae). However, while one or two of the paintings resemble works by Chŏng Sŏn, variation in styles and quality of the paintings suggest that this is a later collection of works by a number of artistsThe firstdouble leaf of the album shows calligraphy, followed by 24 pages of paintingsthat are arranged into either double leaves or single leaf on each side. All of the paintings arerendered on paper, but the materials, colour, and type of pigments are notconsistent. The subject matter of the paintings is diverse, covering landscape, animals, plants and insects, and flowers and birds. There is considerable variation in the style of painting and it is unlikely that all the works wereproduced by a single painter at a particular time. Although this album’s Squirrel on aPine Tree bears a resemblance to Chŏng Sŏn’s famous work Squirrel, in terms of compositionand brushstroke, it cannot be attributed to him with certainty. In all probability, most of the paintings were produced after the 19th century. .
