Scope & Content:

A Korean novel set during the "Spring and Autumn Period" of the Eastern Zhou Dynasty, possibly based on an unidentified Chinese original.

The manuscript is written in several different hands and the volumes vary in size suggesting that it may have been a composite set put together for a lending library. Kwŏn 2, 3, 5 and 6 are roughly uniform in terms of size and calligraphy, as are kwŏn 7 to 34. Kwŏn 4 is unlike either of the other groups implying that at least 3 different copies have been combined.

Kwŏn 3 is dated 긔묘 (己卯) [ 1759?] and kwŏn 5 is dated 임우 (壬午) [ 1762?] .

Material: Ink on paper. Many folios have been treated with linseed (?) oil.

Collation: Originally the work consisted of 34 volumes (kwŏn) but the set is incomplete, lacking kwŏn 1.

32 of the remaining 33 kwŏn have been rebound in 6 volumes: Vol. A: kwŏn 2-5 (134 folios), Vol. B: kwŏn 7-10 (154 folios), Vol. C: kwŏn 11-16 (228 folios), Vol. D: kwŏn 17-22 (220 folios), Vol. E kwŏn 23-28 (237 folios), Vol. F: kwŏn 29-34 (232 folios). At some point after entering the British Museum collection kwŏn 6 (39 folios) became separated from the rest of the manuscript and was given a different shelfmark (15260.c.5). It has now be reunited with the other volumes at shelfmark Or 7362 A1

Dimensions: Bound volumes: 247 x 195 mm. Individual kwŏn vary in size: kwŏn 2, 3 and 5: 245 x 185 mm ; kwŏn 4: 255 x 185 mm ; kwŏn 6 230 x 185 mm ; kwŏn 7 to 34: 235 x 175 mm.

Script: Text in Hangŭl.

Marginalia: There are extensive manuscript notes, doodles and drawings throughout.

Binding: Kwŏn 2-5, 7-34 rebound in Western style British Museum binding c.1910. Kwŏn 6 in original binding with paper front cover (back cover missing).
