Red quarter leather and buckram volume (British Museum binding) measuring 330 x 302 mm and containing 60 prints (numbered 1-64, but lacking prints 30, 43, 48, 50), mounted on green tinted card, with the general title, ‘Théâtre de la Guerre 1870-1871,’ printed at the head of each sheet and the photographer’s name ‘Ad. Braun Phot. Dornach (Ht. Rhin)’ at the bottom. The individual images are numbered and captioned by hand, in French, beneath each print. The photographs all relate either to the town of Belfort and its fortifications (prints 1-51, 62-64) or nearby villages involved in the siege of 1870-71. Locations outside Belfort itself are Cravanche (print 52), Danjoutin (prints 53-55), Bavilliers (prints 56-58), Pérouse (prints 59-60) and Essert (print 61). In several instances the collection includes near-identical scenes, but photographed with lenses of varying focal length. Prints 1-3 are specifically noted as having been taken before the siege and may date from the late 1860s up to 1870. The remaining prints must have been taken after 15 February 1871, when the garrison, with the agreement of both the French government and Bismarck, was permitted to march out of the town with full honours of war intact. Many of the views show damage sustained to buildings in the area during the conflict.
