Title:: Théâtre de la Guerre 1870-1871. Photographer(s): Braun, Jean Adolphe
Scope & Content:: Quarter bound album, red buckram boards, with coat of arms in gilt on front and back covers (British Museum binding), measuring 385 x 312 mm, and containing 15 albumen print views of scenes relating to the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71. The prints are mounted on green-tinted card, each folio printed with the general title 'Théâtre de la Guerre 1870-1871' above the image and the photographer's credit, 'Ad. Braun Phot. Dornach, Ht. Rhin' beneath. Titles for the individual photographs are written in ink on the mount beneath each print. Apart from prints 1, 2 and 15, all the photographs show scenes at Bitche (German Bitsche) in the Moselle, which suffered considerable damage during the siege of 1870.
