Scope & Content:: Quarter leather and red buckram volume (British Museum binding), measuring 365 x 327 mm, containing 26 prints mounted on card with within tinted borders. The title of the collection, in the form of a letterpress label, is pasted into the beginning of the volume. Caption labels, all with the overall title ‘Schlachtfelder bei Metz 1870’ [Battlefields around Metz 1870], and with individual numbered titles relating to the relevant photograph, are pasted onto the reverse of each print mount. The labels also announce Heinrich Siebert of Saarbrücken as the publisher, although it is unclear whether he is also the photographer. The majority of the photographs show memorials erected to German casualties in the campaign and from the numbering of the captions, it would appear that this is a selection from a much larger series of views.
