Title:: Photographic views of Strasbourg [after the siege of 1870]. Photographer(s): Eckert, C. M.
Scope & Content:: Red quarter leather and buckram volume (British Museum binding) measuring 400 x 345 mm, containing 50 albumen prints mounted on card pre-printed with a tinted border, the general title ‘Strassburg’ and legend beneath reading ‘Phot. v. C.M. Eckert Heidelberg. Verl. v. F. Bassermann.’ Individual printed caption labels are pasted beneath each image. The photographs record the devastation inflicted on the city during the German siege and bombardment, which commenced on 23 August 1870 and continued with increasing intensity until the capitulation of the city of 28 September. These photographs would appear to have been taken soon after the surrender and occupation by German forces.
