Photographic views in Dannemarie. Photographer(s): Braun, Jean Adolphe

Scope & Content:

Quarter leather-bound album, red buckram boards, with coat of arms in gilt on front and back covers (British Museum binding), measuring 403 x 332 mm, and containing 19 albumen print views of scenes relating to the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71. The prints are mounted one to a page on blue card, within red rules. Prints 1-5 are mounted on card printed 'Paris 1871,' with photographer's credit and statement that the prints are made by a 'procédé inaltérable' (i.e. a permanent process such as carbon printing, although in fact the photographs are albumen prints). The majority of the views show scenes in the French frontier town of Neuf Brisach, and record the damage sustained both in the town and to the fortress designed by Vauban during the 1870 campaign.
