Photographs taken during the Arctic Expedition of 1875-76. Vol. 1. Photographer(s): Mitchell, Thomas
- Scope & Content:
-
Red half-leather and buckram album (British Museum binding), measuring 295 x 377 mm and containing 55 prints mounted one to a page (recto only), on stout card stamped ‘London Stereoscopic and Photographic Company, 110 and 108 Regent Street, and 54, Cheapside.’ A 10pp. pamphlet listing the captions to the photographs is pasted into the front of the volume. From the layout of the labels, they were presumably intended to be cut up and pasted to the relevant photograph. The series is continued in Maps 20.c.13. The photographers are identified in Sir George Strong Nares’ account of the expedition, ‘Narrative of a Voyage to the Polar Sea during 1875-6 in H.M. Ships ‘Alert’ and ‘Discovery’’ (2 vols, London, 1878), in which a number of the images are also reproduced in woodburytype.
