Scope & Content:

Brown buckram volume measuring 515 x 400 mm (modern binding), containing 62 albumen prints mounted one to a page (recto only), with letterpress captions beneath each image. The 111 photographs (see also Maps 29.d.28/5) form an additional series taken during the survey of 1868-69, but not selected for the three published volumes (see Maps 29.d.28/1-3). While duplicating much of the subject matter of the published images, this is on the whole work of lesser worth and the quality of the printing is certainly far inferior, being made on late 19th-century albumen paper and with a good deal of fading apparent in many of the photographs. Subjects in this volume include: views at Wady Serabit el Khadim, Wady ed Deir, St Catherine’s Convent (with a series of portraits of monks and priests), views of Gebel Musa, Ras Sufsafeh, Wadi Sebaiyeh and Wadi Leja.
