Blue buckram portfolio (modern binding with original titlepiece pasted onto front cover), containing 14 albumen prints on card mounts, each blind-embossed ‘Collard Photographe des Ponts et Chaussées. Atelier Centrale de Photographie. Bould. de Strasbourg, 39.’ In addition to the photographs, the collection also comprises a printed titlepage leaf, a sheet of descriptive text with a list of captions for the photographs (numbered I), a map of the area around the Station du Point-du-Jour with a sectional view of the bridge (numbered II), and a chromolithographed sheet showing a partial elevation and section of the bridge and viaduct (numbered III). The photographs are numbered IV-XVII. The prints record the construction of the road and rail bridge (the railway carried on the viaduct above the road bridge) across the Seine at Point-du-Jour (now Pont de Garigliano), built between 1863 and 1866. These photographs, and Collard’s career in general, are discussed in Elizabeth Anne McCauley, ‘Industrial Madness. Commercial Photography in Paris, 1848-1871’ (Yale University Press, New Haven and London, 1994), pp. 195-232.
