Red half-leather and buckram portfolio containing 38 large-format prints (mainly albumen, but a few carbon prints), mounted on card. The Braun photographs are laid down onto the photographer's standard mount, with tinted border and the legend ‘A. Braun à Dornach, (Haut-Rhin) France’ in the bottom right corner. The prints by Strumper are on plain mounts, blind-embossed ‘Strumper Hamburg’ in the centre of the border beneath the image. The majority of the Strumper photographs are also signed in the negative ‘J. H. S.’, with a reference number. The collection appears to be a conflation of two separately purchased batches of prints, acquired in 1872 (Braun photographs) and 1877 (Strumper photographs). The photographs by Braun show location connected with the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71, clearly taken shortly after the conflict. The series consists of topographical views in Germany and Lorraine and includes photographs of the following locations: Bacharah, Bad Ems, Belfort, Koblenz, Dannemarie, Darmstadt, Hanover, Heidelberg and Strasbourg. There is also included a series of views of the Rhine castles of Lahneck, Ehrenfels and the Mäusethurm, Rheinfels, Sonneck and Stolzenfels.
